T-cell development in the Tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii)
Marsupials and eutherians are the two principal groups of modern mammals. Mammalian immunological studies, to date, have focused on eutherian systems with little or no comprehensive work having been carried out on marsupials. This project investigates the functional and developmental aspects of T-cell responses in the marsupial, Macropus eugenii (Tammar wallaby) in both adults and pouch young at various stages of development. Determination of the age at which the Tammar wallaby immune system becomes competent has been examined through the use of cellular and molecular studies carried out on developing pouch young tissue. The capacity for generating an immunological response in adult and pouch young marsupials has been studied by following cellular proliferation in response to mitogens or mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC). After examining adult responses to mitogens and allogenic lymphocytes, optimised conditions were then used to examine the development of responsiveness in pouch young. Several further tests were conducted and findings shown. The study has shown that the earliest age at which Macropus eugenii is capable of mounting a T-cell mediated immune response is between 5 to 13 days post-partum |

Taiwanese offshore (distant water) fisheries in Southeast Asia, 1936-1977
The development of Kaohsiung's fishing industry was also deeply affected by ethnic factors. Siao Liouciou fishers were solely dedicated to the longline fishing method; Shandong people preferred to be involved in pair-trawl fishing. The final part of the thesis further narrows down the scope of the history of Taiwan's fishing industry to the local level context of the fishing communities. The histories of six fishing companies are used to compare the cultures and management styles of the trawling and longlining fisheries. Finally, the fishers' daily lives in the waters of Southeast Asia, and the culture and routine practices of Kaohsiung's fishing communities are explored in depth |

Drawing on queer theory and the notion of 'overstanding' data, deconstructive interpretations suggested how heterosexuality had been normalized in several institutional discourses within women's physical education. Testing the attractiveness and palatability of stoat lures and baits with various sensory cues /
More attractive lures and acceptable baits are required to improve the efficacy of stoat (Mustela erminea) control in New Zealand. We conducted a series of preference trials on captive stoats to determine the potential of various visual, textural, and movement cues in lures and baits. Bait colour did not affect the time spent investigating or chewing baits, or bait consumption. One mouse-shaped bait with realistic eyes was eaten more than a disk-shaped bait. The addition of possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) fur significantly increased palatability of wax baits, but did not affect consumption of an already palatable bait. Stoats were more likely to cache both of the fur-coated baits than the control baits. Stoats spent more time investigating a concave mirror on the wall than a similarly shaped piece of plastic, and more frequently entered and spent more time in a trap box containing a large mirror than in one without a mirror. However, similar amounts of time were spent in trap boxes with either a small mirror or a hole covered in wire mesh, and in tunnels with and without a mirror, when both contained egg baits. Adding a red light-emitting diode into a trap box did not increase investigatory responses. Stoats ate more egg baits if they could roll (and thus break) the egg than if eggs remained stationary and unbroken. Stoats spent longer investigating moving baits (dead day-old chicks Gallus gallus domesticus, or mice Mus musculus) that were attached to a pendulum, but such baits did not elicit increased biting or chewing responses. This study demonstrates that visual and textural bait features could improve bait consumption, that mirrors could attract stoats to enter traps, and that movement devices could direct the attention of stoats towards baits or control devices. All these concepts need to be refined and field tested before being used |

Text and context of malediction a study of antisemitic and heterosexist hate violence in New South Wales 1995-2000 /
At the core of this dissertation is the analysis of how and why hate speech is successful in constraining the behaviors and actions of marginalized groups. The discordance between what constitutes the social definition of malediction or verbal abuse and the legal definition of vilification, offers an avenue of investigation that illuminates the problems associated with constraining speech acts in a democratic state. In isolating the role of speech in the practice of hate violence in NSW, in this dissertation I show that while government legislation may be able to regulate the extremes of hate speech and hate violence, it leaves untouched the everyday speech acts and acts of violence that are used to separate, isolate, and silence marginalized individuals and groups |

Theater of death capital punishment in early America, 1750-1800 /
This study argues that capital punishment was an important tool of social control in early urban America. Executions were especially frequent in moments of real or perceived crisis. The mindset of juries was therefore essential in determining the punishment of a crime. More importantly, the death penalty was especially deployed to control the lower classes, as the majority of the condemned were young, male, and poor. Executions were correlated to forced labor. Boston, the city with the lowest percentage of forced labor, experienced the lowest rate of executions. Charleston, the city with the highest percentage, also witnessed the highest rate. Philadelphia fell between. The 1780s, a time when contemporaries believed that they experienced an unprecedented crime wave, saw the highest numbers of executions in all three cities with a peak late in the decade. By then the protection of property had become the primary agenda of the death penalty in urban areas |

There is evil there that does not sleep--" the construction of evil in American popular cinema from 1989 to 2002 /
In The lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring, Boromir refers to the lands of Mordor as the place where evil never sleeps. Cinematic evil itself never sleeps, always arising in new forms, to the extent that there exist as many types of evil as there are films. This thesis examines this constantly shifting construction of evil in American popular cinema between 1989 and 2002--roughly, the period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the attack on the World Trade Center--and how this cinema engaged with representations of enemies and of evil per se. The thesis uses content and thematic analysis on a sample of the 201 most successful films at the U.S. box office during the period. In these films, cinematic evil is constructed according to a visual aesthetic that attempts to engage with societal values, but fails to do so due to the emphasis on its visual construction and its commodification. As Baudrillard argues, evil has become a hollow concept devoid of meaning, and this is especially so for cinematic evil. It is recognised, and is recognisable, by the visual excessiveness of its violence (or potentiality for violence), and by certain codes that are created in reference to intertextual patterns and in relationship to discourses of paranoia and malaise. But cinema in this period failed to engage with the concept of evil itself in any meaningful way. Cinematic evil mirrors the descent into the chaos and disorder of a postmodern society. All cinematic evil can do is to connect with this sense of unease in which the "reality of evil" cannot be represented. Instead, it draws on earlier icons and narratives of evil in a conflation of narrative and spectacle that produces a cinema of nostalgia. Moreover, stripped of narrative causality, these films express a belief, unproved and unprovable, that evil things and evil people may arise in any form, in any place and at any time: a cinema of paranoia. Together, these factors produce a cinema of malaise, perpetually confronting an evil it is unable to define or locate |

TI national integrity systems country studies
Transparency International has developed National Integrity System country studies to provide a detailed and nuanced assessment of anti-corruption systems at country level. The studies are based on TI's National Integrity System concept, which encompasses the interrelated elements necessary to promote accountability and integrity in a society. Since their introduction in 2000, the NIS country studies have provided a rich resource that profiles strengths and weaknesses in an anti-corruption system. Country studies complement TI's global measurement tools (CPI, BPI and Global Corruption Barometer), providing more in-depth assessment at country level. Moreover, these qualitative studies create the basis for diagnostic and policy reform and enable the formulation of targeted and effective national anti-corruption strategies |

TIGR reptile database
"This database is intended to provide information on the classification of all living reptiles by listing all species and their pertinent higher taxa. The database therefore covers all living snakes, lizards, turtles, amphisbaenians, tuataras, and crocodiles. It is supposed to be a source of taxonomic data, thus providing primarily (scientific) names, synonyms, distributions and related data. However, a limited number of species accounts contain links to external sources including pictures"--Introd |

|
Tollman and Canaris photographs, circa 1893-1897
The photographs from this collection may have been taken during a brief sojourn by the Tollmans from their home in Long Beach, Washington, during the fall of 1897. The images, most of them badly faded, depict salmon fishing activities in Skamania and Pacific Counties, especially along the Columbia River, in the late 1890s. Included are photographs of some of the first salmon canning and processing companies in Washington State |
