Racial and sexual orientation identity and social support as predictors of sexual risk-taking behavior among African-American men who have sex with men
Results from the Young Men's Survey (Valleroy et al., 2000) suggest that two factors associated with HIV risk among MSMs: 1) being a member of an ethnic/racial minority and 2) history of anal sex with another man. Furthermore, the literature suggests that gay men who do not accept their sexual identity practice risky sexual behaviors more than gay men who are more accepting of their sexual identity (Meyer et al., 1995). Furthermore, researchers have suggested that MSMs who have positive ethnic or sexual orientation identities were less likely than other MSMs to engage in HIV risk-taking behaviors, such as unprotected sexual contact (Peterson & Marin, 1988; Seibt et al., 1993). Gay African-Americans who affirm their sexual orientation identity feel they are perceived by other African Americans as abandoning ties to the African-American community and assuming another minority group status (Stokes & Peterson, 1998). Trobst, Herbst, Masters, and Costa (2002) found that within a sample consisting primarily of African Americans, individuals tended to engage in high risk behaviors, such as casual sex, to cope with emotional distress, such as poor social support. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether reported racial/sexual orientation identity and social support predict sexual risk-taking behaviors among African American men who have sex with men. The participants were 637 African American men who reported at least one sexual experience with another man. This project was a secondary analysis of a sample that participated in a national questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to predict sexual risk from racial/sexual orientation and social support variables. In particular, social support variables were tested as possible mediator variables between racial/sexual orientation and sexual risk. Results from the study suggest that racial/sexual identification is not a significant predictor of sexual risk behavior and, as a result, social support is not a mediator between the two. In addition, there was not a relationship between social support and sexual risk behaviors. However, there was an association between racial/sexual identification and social support, which may be an area of further research |

Radio, community, and identity in South Africa a rhizomatic study of Bush Radio in Cape Town /
In particular, I argue that Bush Radio is not so much an organization as it is an organism, held together by a complex set of interlinked structures, with the concept of "community" pulsating as its central life-force. A kind of "body without organs" (Haraway, 1989), Bush Radio has no real essence--it is both the embodiment of community radio at its best--and its antithesis. Bush Radio is not a "bush" radio, geographically or figuratively. It sports state of the art digital equipment and a relatively sophisticated organizational structure, yet it is still deeply connected to the various communities it serves |

Rearing, identification, and biology of parasitoids and predators associated with Pissodes weevils in Canada /
Methods for collecting and rearing parasitoids of larvae and pupae of Pissodes species are discussed. Illustrated keys are provided for the identification of 31 species of Diptera and Hymenoptera, which are parasitoids, hyperparasitoids, and scavengers associated with Pissodes species. Twenty-six of these species are known to occur in Canada, and another 5 are widespread in the United States and probably occur in Canada. A list is provided of 33 other species which have been recorded as associates of Pissodes species, but whose records are suspect and have not been confirmed. A brief discussion of the biology and abundance of each species which is included in the key is given. A glossary is given |

Reclaiming the Everglades south Florida's natural history, 1884-1934
Reclaiming the Everglades includes a rich diversity of unique or rare materials: personal correspondence, essays, typescripts, reports and memos; photographs, maps and postcards; and publications from individuals and the government. Major topics illustrated include the establishment of the Everglades National Park; the growth of the modern conservation movement and its institutions, including the National Audubon Society; the evolving role of women on the political stage; the treatment of Native Americans; rights of individual citizens or private corporations vs. the public interest; and accountability of government as trustees of public resources, whether for the purposes of development, reclamation, or environmental protection |

Recognizing a different other neo-Kleinian analysis of lesbian relationship violence /
Experience is both a starting point for analysis and a kind of measure against which discourse can be assessed. Although experience has a formative role in establishing discourse on lesbian relationship violence, experience is not without problems. Experience can not be taken solely as a source of truth or an arbiter of discourse, because it is not outside social, political, historical, and cultural forces. Accordingly, this study discovered that lesbian experiences of relationship violence are often understood in a decontextualized and simplified manner; they are either taken at face-value or translated into therapeutic language that is essentialist, heterosexist, or both. Also, these dominant frameworks for interpreting lesbian experiences of relationship violence tended to be adopted by therapist, researcher, victimized lesbian, and the lesbian who was violent. What these findings suggest is that lesbian experiences of relationship violence are often more complex and dynamic than their portrayals. It is concluded that together neo-Kleinian and postmodern feminist theory provide a framework in which lesbian experiences of relationship violence can be critically reflected upon, understood, and treated for their complexity |

Recovery history of greenback cutthroat trout population characteristics, hatchery involvement, and bibliography /
The greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias) is native to the mountain and foothill waters of the South Platte and Arkansas river basins in Colorado. This taxon declined rapidly beginning near the turn of the century and was listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. We assembled all available information from a variety of sources to document recovery efforts from 1957 to 1999. For each greenback cutthroat trout population, we noted (1) the characteristics of recovery waters and dates of population discovery or introduction; (2) fish abundance estimates; (3) analyses of genetic purity; (4) salmonid fauna, removal efforts, and reinvasions; and (5) dates, sources, and numbers of fish used to establish populations. For each hatchery used to assist recovery, we noted (1) sources and numbers of fish delivered to them; (2) sources, sex ratios, and production of fish used to create particular year classes; and (3) dates, numbers, and sizes of hatchery fish shipped to establish wild populations or supplement other hatchery stocks |

This document is a five-year multi-species plan for the recovery of seven threatened stream frogs of south-east Queensland. The southern dayfrog and southern gastric-brooding frog declined and disappeared in the late 1970s to early 1980s. They have not been located since then, despite considerable survey effort. All other species are reported to have undergone population declines, although these are sometimes poorly quantified. One of these species, the cascade treefrog, declined markedly in Queensland in the late 1970s-early 1980s. However, numbers have since shown some recovery |

Red state, blue state, red news, blue news
This research is organized by an investigation of the demand-side and supply-side of media polarization. The demand-side study looks at ideological news audiences through a series of path analysis models using the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press 2004 media consumption survey. On the "supply side," media polarization is demonstrated through a content analysis of 44 television news transcripts to quantify the amount of partisan news framing during the Senate confirmation hearings for Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. Through both of these quantitative studies, and complimented by a review of polarization literature, as well as interviews with political communication experts, the case is quite strong for the politically polarizing effects of the news media |

Relating women lesbian experience of friendship /
Lesbians who are confident communicators, who have access to alternative feminist discourses which value relatedness, and who, together with their friends, are open to change, are able to negotiate satisfactory friendships and relationships. The study demonstrates lesbians' complex subjectivities as changing selves are negotiated through friendships, love relationships, and communities, particularly through experiences of loss |

relationship between political environment and size of a library's collection of GLBTQ fiction for young adults
This study examines the young adult fiction holdings of the main branch libraries of six capital cities in the United States. The study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between the political leanings of the area the libraries were situated in and the size of their young adult fiction collection with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (GLBTQ) characters. The holdings of each library were compared to a checklist of YA titles with GLBTQ characters published between 1994 and 2004. The expected outcome that libraries in liberal areas would contain higher GLBTQ collections was not supported by the data; indeed, the reverse was true. Libraries in conservative areas had the largest collections of GLBTQ literature for young adults, though the study does not attempt to establish a causal relationship between politics and collection |

Remote sensing of wetlands in Yellowstone National Park
As part of the Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative, satellite remote sensing was used to identify potential wetland amphibian habitat in Yellowstone National Park. Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery was combined with ancillary predictors of wetland occurrence including habitat type, cover type, landform type, bedrock geology, soil attributes, terrain measures, and climate data. Classification trees were used to predict the likelihood of palustrine wetland occurrence across the Yellowstone landscape. Wetland maps generated by this study are intended to address shortcomings of the National Wetland Inventory in Yellowstone; namely, errors-of-omission and the temporally invariant nature of the inventory. Relative importance of Thematic Mapper imagery, image texture information, terrain measures, and thematic spatial data were assessed by comparing the accuracy of classification trees trained with different subsets of predictors. In general, classification trees using all available predictors exhibited the greatest accuracy. Classification tree structure was similar in models generated with satellite imagery from different years. Also, similar accuracy rates were found across years. The results indicate that the method could be applied to annual wetland monitoring. Average producer's accuracy for the palustrine wetland class was approximately 0.92. Five palustrine wetland classes were discriminated with an average overall accuracy of approximately 0.83. A wetland map derived from a 1 August, 2003 Thematic Mapper image was field-verified in late-summer and early-autumn of 2003. The classification tree methodology appears to be sensitive to within-season wetland condition and yearly wetland variability. Satellite remote sensing located wetlands not mapped by the National Wetland Inventory and also identified upland sites erroneously classified as wetland. Methods developed by this study are general enough to be applied in other physiographic settings and should prove to be useful to amphibian conservation efforts over large geographic extents |
