Habitat relationships and life history of the Rota bridled white-eye (Zosterops rotensis)
The Rota bridled white-eye (Zosterops rotensis) (Aves, Passeriformes) has experienced a severe population decline and range restriction over the last four decades. Little is known about this species and factors involved in the decline and range restriction are unclear. This study examined the potential roles of habitat alteration, introduced black drongos (Dicrurus macrocercus), and introduced rats in the decline and gathered more information on the behavior and breeding biology of this species. New life history data were collected and Rota and Saipan bridled white-eyes were found to differ in nest site characteristics and some behaviors. The importance of habitat alteration was assessed by examining Rota bridled white-eye habitat relationships at the microhabitat, within-range, Sabana-wide, and island-wide levels. Rota bridled white-eyes show a preference for high elevation wet forest but what drives their distribution within their current range was unclear. However, the alteration of this forest type by supertyphoon Roy in 1988 was probably the major factor in the decline of Rota BWEs between 1982 and 1996. Black drongo and Rota bridled white-eye relationships were addressed using current and historical survey data. Black drongos were found to prey on Rota bridled white-eyes but they probably only played at most a partial role in the decline of the Rota bridled white-eye. Introduced rats densities were assessed in Rota bridled white-eye areas and on other areas of the island and no evidence for rat numbers limiting Rota bridled white-eyes to their current range was found |

Habitat requirements and foraging ecology of the Madagascar fish-eagle /
The results of this study indicate that Madagascar fish-eagles require bodies of water with large shoreline trees and an ample fish population. I recommend greater protection of aquatic habitats, monitoring and management of freshwater fish populations, and education of local people in sustainable tree harvesting practices |

Habitat selection : demography and individual decisions /
Overall, I show that constraints acting on individual habitat selection result in a greater proportion of individuals breeding in poorer habitats than would be expected from ideal selection, which has consequences for population persistence |

Habitat use and the effects of disturbance on wintering birds using riparian habitats in Sonora, Mexico
To place my own bird survey data in a broader context, I appended a compilation of more than 48,500 records from between 1849 and 2006 on the birds of Sonora from published accounts, museum specimens, and my own field work. They include a total of 533 species, nine of which were added from the compilation and my own field work. I also discuss the status of other species for the State's inventory |

Handbook on observations of pride marches
The handbook looks at different aspects of observing Pride marches. It explains briefly the principles of human rights monitoring. It lists relevant human rights instruments which can be invoked when a Pride march is banned or violent. Then it gives some practical advice and tools on human rights monitoring through observation of Pride marches. Once the factual information is collected it is important to gather the information in a report and to send it to the relevant human rights organisation. Information is given on organisations that monitor the implementation of human rights standards and how to approach them. Finally it looks into the possibility of taking cases before courts at national and international level and the challenges attached to this approach. This handbook can be used in conjunction with the toolkit on how to organise pride marches in a difficult environment which is available on the ILGA-Europe website |

Heteronormativity in a nursing context attitudes toward homosexuality and experiences of lesbians and gay men /
The general aim of the project was to describe the situation of lesbians and gay men in a nursing environment by studying the attitudes of nursing staff and students, and the experiences of gay nursing staff in their work environment and of gay patients and partners in their encounters with nursing. The study for papers I and II had a descriptive, comparative design. Nurses, assistant nurses, and nursing students completed the Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Scale (ATHS), the Causes of Homosexuality Questionnaire (CHQ), and the Affect Adjective Checklist (AAC), along with the Nursing Behaviour Questionnaire (NBQ). In general, the participating nursing staff and students expressed positive attitudes, though some subjects reported very negative attitudes toward gay people. The participants also expressed a full spectrum of emotions from delight to anger. The studies for papers III and IV had a descriptive, explorative design. Here, the data collection was performed by semi-structured interviews. The informants were gay nursing staff, gay patients and partners of patients. The gay personnel reported fear and concern about heterosexuals' reactions when these informants "come out," and were constantly assesing the risk being open about their sexual orientation among their workmates. Nearly all patients and partners described several situations where heteronormative assumptions were communicated by the nursing staff. Almost all informants offered recommendations for nursing staff to facilitate communication. According to the presented findings, probably only a small minority in Swedish nursing have negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. However, the informants told of heteronormative language and behaviour in nursing contexts that were percieved as insensitive, insulting and humaliating. Nursing staff need to learn how to communicate in a more natural way and to be aware of the norms they communicate through the language and behaviour they use |

High mountain lake research natural areas in Idaho
High mountain lakes in Idaho total about 1800 and represent one of the most pristine type ecosystems in the country. Limnological characteristics are described for 27 lakes and 20 ponds in 32 established and proposed Research Natural Areas (RNA) representing seven subregions in the state. Field collections were made from the 1960s through 1999 by different researchers. Even though data about some of these lakes is not currently available, the databases can be updated as research continues. A classification is developed to include elevation, size, depth, production potential and lake origin. Additional information that describes the sites is pH, rock type and hydrology. Aquatic plants, zooplankton, immature aquatic insects and cold water vertebrates inhabiting the water bodies are described. The classification can be applied to gap analysis to identify missing or under-represented natural area types. Future research efforts can focus on covering the gaps and bringing more high mountain lakes into the RNA system |

history of the Sydney and Melbourne Film Festivals, 1945-1972 negotiating between culture and industry /
This thesis is a history of the Sydney and Melbourne International Film Festivals, and covers the years from 1945 to 1972. Based primarily on archival material, it is an organizational history dealing with the attempts by the two Film Festivals to negotiate between the demands of "culture" and "industry" throughout this period. The thesis begins with a consideration of the origins of the festivals in the post-war period--with the attempts by non-Hollywood producers to break into the cinema market, the collapse of the "mass audience," and the growth of the film society movement in Australia. The thesis then examines the establishment in the early 1950s of the Sydney and Melbourne Festivals as small, amateur events, run by and for film enthusiasts. It then traces the festivals' historical development until 1972, by which time both festivals had achieved an important status as social and cultural organizations within Australia. The main themes dealt with throughout this period of development include the festivals' difficult negotiations with both the international and domestic film trade, their ongoing internal debates over their role and purpose as cultural organizations, their responses to the appearance of other international film festivals in Australia, their relation to the Australian film industry, and their fight to liberalize Australia's film censorship regulations |

HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the Netherlands in 2004 an update, November 2005 /
The increasing trend of sexually transmitted infections (STI) has continued further in 2004, despite a slight levelling off in 2003. The rise was observed both in the number of consultations and STI among heterosexuals and men having sex with men (MSM). In 2004, the number of new HIV diagnoses in the national HIV registry only increased among MSM. Serious epidemics of STI have occurred simultaneously in this group recently. The increase of HIV and STI suggest an increase of sexual risk behaviour among MSM. Alertness and innovative prevention and intervention methods are required to prevent a further spread of STI and HIV. As of June 2005, a total of 10619 HIV cases were reported in the Netherlands; 938 diagnoses in 2004. MSM still account for the majority of the cases. The number of heterosexually acquired infections declined for the first time in 2004. In the STI sentinel surveillance network, the number of chlamydial cases increased by 19%, that of gonorrhoea by 12%. Also, diagnoses of syphilis and HIV continued to rise in 2004. In 2000-2004, the number of syphilis cases among MSM has more than tripled. 14% of all chlamydial cases, gonorrhoea and syphilis cases among MSM were seen in HIV positives. Furthermore, in 2004 the percentage of ciprofloxacin resistance in gonococci has further increased to 15%. Enhanced surveillance of LGV was started in a response to an outbreak of LGV among MSM. Since January 2004, 160 cases had been reported. LGV has now been reported by other European countries, the USA and Canada as well. In the Netherlands, the number of LGV cases seem to rise slowly |
