INFO Deconstructing the racialisation experience of Asian Australians process, impact, and response /
In addition, the study demonstrates how Asian Australians cope with the stress of their everyday racialisation by drawing from their personal repertoire of discursive, cognitive and behavioural strategies. These, in combination with outside support mechanisms, make up what can be termed "everyday anti-racism" strategies. Racialisation provides valuable insights into when, how and why racialised subjects deploy these different strategies to negotiate, contest and bridge the constraints and boundaries imposed on them. The study offers an integrated model for understanding racialisation experience and lays the foundation for developing further the concepts of "everyday racialisation" and "everyday antiracism."
INFO Deconstructing the representation of AIDS in poetry
In poetry written about AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the contraction of the disease is continually divulged by explaining to which group the poet, as speaking subject, or the subject, as the individual about whom the poem is written, belongs. A homosexual, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the means of contraction of HIV to be gay sex. An intravenous drug abuser, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the sharing of syringes as the means of contraction. The subject or speaking subject's position within a socially-defined community or an identity group continually reaffirms the belief that AIDS only affects certain already-marginalized groups. Read individually, poems about AIDS continually marginalize the experience of those infected by failing to acknowledge the universality of AIDS from which, as Jacques Derrida explains, "no human is ever safe" (Derrida, 20). In my thesis, I will argue that the poetic representation of AIDS is informed by identity issues that resist universalizing the experience of AIDS

INFO Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by actinomycetes /
The potential of some actinomycetes to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the effect of co-substrates, plants and other additives on their degradation and bioavailability was studied. A glass bead system for growth of PAH-degrading actinomycetes in liquid culture was developed and used for the screening of strains for biosurfactant activity and phenanthrene degradation in the presence of different co-substrates. Indication of biosurfactant production by all tested strains was obtained with hexadecane and rapeseed oil as co-substrates but not with glucose. Rhodococcus sp. DSM 44126 was identified as R. wratislaviensis and found to be able to degrade phenanthrene and anthracene. An actinomycete with a high capacity to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene was isolated from an agricultural soil and identified as Mycobacterium LP1. The catabolic activity of both strains was studied in liquid cultures and in soil. Several additives were also tested for their effect on PAH degradation in soils. The surfactant Triton X-100, but not wheat straw, promoted PAH degradation in a soil with aged creosote by increasing the bioavailability of the compounds. The presence of plants increased the proportion of active microorganisms and enhanced PAH degradation, likely due to root exudates provided by the plants. In a PAH-spiked soil, the addition of rapeseed oil (1% w/w) stimulated the degradation of anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene mainly as a result of abiotic processes, but negatively affected the degradation of phenanthrene and pyrene, probably due to limitations in nutrient and oxygen supply. Based on these results, a new sequential treatment in two steps for cleaning PAH-contaminated soil was designed and tested using four different PAH as model substances. The first step consisted of the inoculation with Mycobacterium LP1, favouring biological degradation of low-molecular-weight PAH, and the second step consisted of the addition of rapeseed oil, which promoted the abiotic transformation, and probably also the solubilisation, of the high-molecular-weight PAH

INFO Demography of Lewis's woodpecker, breeding bird densities, and riparian aspen integrity in a grazed landscape
Aspen (Populus tremuloides) riparian woodlands are extremely limited in distribution throughout the western U.S., yet these habitats have a disproportionate value to breeding birds. Aspen habitats are also considered prime sheep and cattle summer range, particularly in the semiarid Intermountain West. Such concentrated use has raised concern about the effects of sheep and cattle grazing on these habitats. We examined the influences of sheep and cattle grazing on aspen riparian woodlands and the associated breeding bird community. We had two objectives: 1) to determine how habitats grazed by sheep and cattle influenced the reproductive biology of Lewis's woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis), and 2) to determine how vegetation differed between sheep and cattle-grazed aspen riparian woodlands and how these differences influenced breeding birds densities. To examine what factors influenced nest-site selection in Lewis's woodpecker and whether these factors influenced nest survival, we quantified nest-site characteristics and monitored nests to determine nest fate. Lewis's woodpecker nest-site selection was positively influenced by nest tree diameter and tree density and negatively influenced by increasing amounts of bare ground and woody stems. However, these characteristics were not strong predictors of nest survival. Instead, nest initiation date and daily average temperature had the strongest influence. We then compared several vegetation characteristics between grazing treatments, conducted point transect surveys and used distance sampling techniques to estimate breeding bird densities. Cattle-grazed sites had more bare ground, less herbaceous cover, lower willow (Salix spp.) densities, and lower aspen densities than sheep-grazed sites. Differences in breeding bird densities between these grazing treatments reflected these vegetation differences, as ground-nesting species and riparian specialists had lower densities in cattle-grazed areas. Data from this study provide landowners and land managers with information on the habitat requirements of sensitive bird species needed to implement compatible grazing strategies in aspen riparian woodlands
INFO Den control of stoats (Mustela erminea) in Trounson Kauri Park, Northland
Locating natal stoat dens using trained predator dogs and controlling any containing female stoats and dependent young near a managed conservation area is potentially an effective management method, reducing the summer influx of young stoats into the ecosystem at a particularly vulnerable period for newly hatched kiwi chicks. A pilot study started in September 2001 was intended to test the effectiveness of targeting and controlling stoat dens in Trounson Kauri Park (a mainland island) and its environs. Once located by trained dogs, stoat dens had the specified number of MagtoxinEO pellets placed inside and all entrances were then sealed. Out of fifteen possible dens only two were effectively controlled with Magtoxin (with two others possibly controlled, although the animals from them were not recovered, and the female from another was trapped and killed). The main reason for the ineffectiveness of control was that not all tunnels to a den were located and blocked. It was also thought that Magtoxin might not be appropriate to use for some dens and might need to be used in conjunction with trapping. It was suggested that the timing of future den searching be shifted to October and November, and a combination of control methods be used

Biological diversity in the Rotorua Lakes, New Zealand, is under threat from aquatic pests, in particular pest fish species and various lake weeds. This report considers possible solutions to both out-of-district contamination and cross-contamination of the Rotorua Lakes. A network comprising ten decontamination facilities is proposed, with facilities located on public land: specifically, land managed by the Department of Conservation and road reserves. A number of decontamination methods are considered. The two methods that are recommended for further investigation are high-pressure, multi-nozzle water blasting, and a combination of dipping and ultrasonic irradiation. Incentives to use the decontamination facilities and construction and operational costs are considered. As a case study, a facility located at the southern entrance to Rotorua is considered. Possible costs to establish this case-study facility are also provided. It is proposed that a single case-study facility be established initially, and monitored for operational and strategic success

INFO Design and use of artificial refuges for monitoring adult tree weta, Hemideina crassidens and H. thoracica /
Artificial refuges were investigated for assessing populations of tree weta (Orthoptera:Anostostomatidae) in New Zealand by testing refuge design with adult Hemideina crassidens and H. thoracica in the laboratory, in a temperature-controlled glasshouse and in the field at six forest sites covering a range of altitudes and vegetation types. In laboratory and glasshouse tests, both species preferred refuges made from aged pine (Pinus radiata) to fresh pine, and willow wood (Salix alba) to pine. Neither species of adult entered holes 10 mm in diameter, but both entered holes 16 mm or 25 mm in diameter. Adult H. crassidens preferred galleries with tapering terminations to rounded terminations, refuges without Perspex observation windows, and refuges made from willow wood over those made of concrete. Adult H. thoracica preferred refuges made from concrete to willow wood. Adult mice (Mus musculus), which are potential predators of weta, were largely excluded from galleries with entrances <= 18 mm in diameter. In the field, the number of tree weta found in artificial refuges varied amongst the six sites. Weta first appeared 1.9 months after refuges were set, and reached maximum numbers after 2.14 months. Both species usually occurred singly in galleries and most frequently in long, upturned galleries. The number of weta in refuges varied little with height above ground, but there is evidence that this was positively correlated with the number of weta in natural cavities and was higher where rodents were controlled. There was no difference between the number of weta found in refuges in the interior of a forest and near the forest edge

INFO Desired future conditions of riparian areas on southeastern national forests
Finally, I designed, tested, and evaluated a public involvement process that identified public values for use in the development of DFCs for riparian areas on the Jefferson National Forest. I used a combination of alternative dispute resolution techniques and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a participatory decision-making tool. I used surveys before and after the riparian meetings to evaluate the effectiveness of the public involvement process. Survey respondents generally were middle-aged, well-educated, high-income males who were long-time residents of the area. Riparian meeting participants indicated that the DFC for riparian areas on the JNF should strongly emphasize water quality and quantity, protection of riparian-dependent species and their habitats, and maintenance of the integrity of the relationship between riparian areas and the surrounding environment. Participants indicated recreational and commodity uses of riparian areas could occur as long as they did not negatively affect the other, more highly valued characteristics of riparian areas. Participants felt that the meetings were fair, that diverse interests were represented, that they had enough information to participate in the process, and that it was a wise use of their time

INFO Determination of habitat preferences of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) on the rolling plains of Texas using GIS and remote sensing
The Rocker b Ranch on the southern rolling plains has one of the last sizeable populations of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in Texas. To investigate habitat utilization on the ranch, pronghorn were fitted with GPS/VHF collars and were released into pastures surrounded by a variety of fences to determine how fence types affected habitat selection. Habitat parameters chosen for analysis were vegetation, elevation, slope, aspect, and distances to water, roads, and oil wells. Results showed that pronghorn on the ranch crossed modified fencing significantly less than other types of fencing. Pronghorn selected for all habitat parameters to various degrees, with the most important being vegetation type. Habitat selection could be attributed to correspondence of vegetation type with other parameters or spatial arrangements of physical features of the landscape. Seasonal differences in habitat utilization were evident, and animals tended to move shorter distances at night than they did during daylight hours

INFO development and management framework for a new Octopus vulgaris fishery in South Africa
A new policy incorporating an operational protocol was developed for the establishment of new fisheries in South Africa. The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris was used as a candidate species for the project. The operational protocol consisted of a three-phased development framework, namely information gathering (Phase 0), an experimental fishery (Phase 1) and the final implementation of a commercial fishery (Phase 2). The present study focussed on phase 0 of this theoretical framework and protocol and was implemented by using a proposed octopus pot fishery in South Africa as a case study. Phase 0 included a desktop study, information gathering in the field, an economic feasibility study and the formulation of a Fishery Management Plan and experimental design for the fishery. Information gaps identified during the desktop study were addressed during field investigations into the population structure and biology of O. vulgaris along the southeast coast. Immature females were found to use the intertidal area to feed and grow before migrating to the subtidal area to mature and spawn. Mean size differed substantially between intertidal and subtidal areas, with larger octopus found subtidally. Age and growth trials using tetracycline as a marker showed that O. vulgaris deposit daily growth lines in their beaks. A genetic study showed that there is most likely only one panmitic population along the coast. The economic feasibility study indicated that a longline pot fishery could be feasible provided a 30% catch in 6600 pots/month is attained. Only existing, debt-free vessels should be used in this fishery. The Fishery Management Plan proposed in this study includes management measures such as effort limitation of licences and gear, size restrictions, vessel monitoring systems, and observer programmes. INFO Development of a long-life bait for control of stoats
Three types of long-life stoat bait (polymer, paste, and gel) were formulated from natural and synthetic bait ingredients after extensive testing of potential ingredients. Feeding trials demonstrated that baits containing natural extracts from rabbit and chicken were preferred to bait that contained only processed meals and synthetic flavors. The addition of preservatives and waterproofing agents to improve bait longevity, lowered palatability markedly in all bait types. The texture of bait also affected the amount of bait eaten, with most stoats rejecting baits that were hard or needed to be chewed before they could be swallowed. In this study, significantly more long-life polymer and paste bait was eaten than gel bait. The polymer bait remained palatable after one month in the field. Although all long-life bait formulations tested were less palatable than fresh meat, most stoats (i.e. >=90%) consumed sufficient quantities of polymer and paste baits to receive a lethal dose (>5 g) if baits had contained a toxin. This was similar to the percentage of stoats eating pricked eggs, and better than consumption of non-pricked hen eggs. Methods for further increasing bait consumption and extending their effectiveness over time are being assessed, the ultimate goal being a long-life bait that is as palatable as fresh meat

This publication provides guidance to the cataloger about whether or not to create a new bibliographic record. General guidelines are followed by specific guidelines for manifestation-level records for single part monographs, multipart monographs, integrating resources, and serials. The text describes what constitutes a major difference between manifestations, requiring the creation of an original record, as well as detailing major changes within a serial manifestation that would lead to the creation of a new record. In addition, guidance is provided regarding minor changes that would not require a new bibliographic record, but might necessitate updating an existing record
