Services for Users with Disabilities

Upon request, library staff in all units will assist with the retrieval of books and with the use of electronic and other bibliographic resources. Time needed for retrieval will vary depending on staff availability. Wheelchair accessible study carrels and electronic work stations are available throughout the Libraries. The OUGL Adaptive Technology Alcove has two PCs running adaptive technologies including Jaws for Windows, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, ZoomText Xtra, and Microsoft Magnifier. The Media Center, also located in OUGL, has telecaption equipment as well as wheelchair accessible and lighting-enhanced media carrels. The Access Technology Lab in the Mary Gates Hall Computing Resource Center is wheelchair accessible and offers adaptive equipment. The Health Sciences Libraries also provides services for users with disabilities.

Suzzallo Library has several rooms which are available for use by students with disabilities who have obtained eligibility to use the room through Disabled Student Services (DSS), 448 Schmitz Hall, 206-543-8924 (V/TTY), uwdss@u.washington.edu. DSS issues the key codes used to access these rooms.

A DSS student I.D. card verifies eligibility to use these rooms. Library staff, DSS staff, Access Technology Lab staff, as well as other students with disabilities needing to access these rooms, may request to see the DSS student I.D. card to verify eligibility to use the rooms. Students who do not have the DSS student I.D. card will be asked to vacate the room.

Many campus buildings do not meet all of the current ADA accessible standards and library units' hours vary, so it is wise to contact the unit directly to identify accessible routes and facilities and to confirm that assistance will be available during the time of your visit.

Proxy Borrowing

You may authorize another person to check out materials in your name.

Faculty, Academic Staff, Professional Staff, and Visiting Scholars may designate up to two proxies to borrow Library materials on their behalf at no charge. The principal borrower assumes responsibility for all material borrowed on the proxy card. Proxy cards are issued by the Library Cashier, but application cards are available at most Circulation Desks and at the Library Cashier. The card must be signed by both the principal borrower and the proxy borrower. For fastest service, applications should be submitted in person to the Cashier. They may also be mailed directly to the Library Cashier (Box 352000) or turned in to any Circulation Desk for mailing. In this case, the proxy card will be mailed to the principal borrower.

Requests from students are processed by Disabled Student Services
