Creating an EndNote Z39.50 Connection file

This service is offered "as-is" and is not supported.

EndNote v.3 and higher includes a Z39.50 client that allows you to import citations directly from queries against a Z39.50 server. Not all database providers offer Z39.50 access. Among those who do are Ovid and CSA. In addition, as an experimental service, databases that the University Libraries license from Silverplatter are now available via a Z39.50 gateway. This service is available from UW campus IP addresses only.

The most complete list of Z39.50 connection files is available from the Thompson/ISI EndNote web site at http://www.endnote.com/support/enconnections.asp. Many of these base files require you to customize the settings; some examples are provided below. The sample connection files are for the Windows version of EndNote, so Mac users need to hold down the shift key when opening them. To customize a file using the Windows version of EndNote 5:

  1. Download the appropriate connection file from the EndNote website.
  2. Open EndNote, and from the main screen choose "Files/Connection Files/Open Connection Manager"
  3. Locate the connection file you downloaded in the list of files, check it, and click "Edit"
  4. Select "Connection settings" from the list in the left panel
  5. Enter the appropriate connection settings from list below
  6. Save your changes and close Connection Manager
  7. Connect to the database by choosing "File/Connect"
