Services Provided by the Engineering Library


Collection Scope

The Engineering Library collects materials and supports study and research in the following subject areas. The links below are to electronic resources available in these areas.


Locating Materials

The UW Libraries Catalog provides access to the holdings of the UW Libraries system. The location Engineering signifies that the item is held by the Engineering Library.

Assistance for Users with Disabilities

The Engineering Library is wheelchair accessible and equipped with an elevator. Library staff members are available to assist patrons with disabilities in obtaining books and other resources.


Engineering Library Web Site

The Engineering Library's web site at http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/ contains information about the library, classes and instructional sessions, collections and resources, reference materials, and patents and trademarks.


Borrowing Library Materials

Materials in the Engineering Library are available for on-site use by the academic community and the general public. Most library materials may be checked out at the Circulation Desk by UW affiliates and by off-campus users with borrowing privileges. Those with borrowing privileges may also place searches or holds on items that are missing or checked out.

Your current University of Washington identification is required to borrow materials. You may be asked to provide picture identification as well. The library cashier in Suzzallo can provide information about borrowing privileges for persons not affiliated with the university.

Reserve Materials

Request course and permanent reserve materials by call number at the Circulation Desk. Call number information is available.

New Book Shelf

Books recently added to the collection are kept for one week on the New Book Shelf. A list of these titles, updated weekly, can be found at http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/newbooks/


Microfiche Technical Reports

Access to the library's microfiche technical report collection (housed on the third floor), is provided by the NTIS database and the UW Libraries Catalog. For tips on finding technical reports, see: http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/techreports/


Reference Materials and Services

Members of the reference staff are available to answer questions or provide instruction in using reference materials. Reference Desk hours vary.

Electronic access to a variety of databases, including the UW Libraries Catalog, is provided at terminals in the reference area.

Access to Email and the WWW is also available on selected terminals in the Reference Area.


Document Delivery

Current Seattle Campus faculty, staff, and students are eligible to receive free delivery of scholarly science articles not available in the UW Libraries and needed for university-related research or coursework. Health Sciences and Law affiliated users should contact the service desks in those units for requests of articles, where there may be fees.

When you find references to scholarly science articles you need for university research or coursework and they are not available in the UW Libraries, consult UWorld Express. UWorld Express provides interlibrary loan and document delivery services.


Patents and Trademarks

The Engineering Library is a U.S. Patent and Trademark Depository Library. Holdings include full-text U.S. Patents on microfilm from 1966 to the present, and the Official Gazette from 1872 to the present, and the CASSIS CD-ROM system.

Instruction Center (ELIC)

The ELIC is co-managed by UW Computing and Communications and the UW Libraries. It is used for teaching various demonstration-based or hands-on instruction sessions. More information about the ELIC is available at: http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/services/elic/


Library Classes

During the regular academic year the Engineering Library offers a variety of drop-in classes, including database searching sessions. Ask at the Reference Desk for a current quarter schedule, or visit our web site: http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/classes/


Periodicals

Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title on the second floor. Recent issues of journals are arranged on the display shelves in the center of the floor.

ACM Depository

The Engineering Library is a national depository for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The depository collection receives one copy of each ACM journal and conference proceeding. These materials are available for in-library use by UW faculty, staff, and students.


Copy Machines

There are two Copy machines located on the second floor and one on the first floor near the Reference Desk. A copy card dispensing machine is also located on the first floor. Microfiche and microfilm reader/printers are available on the first floor.

The copy machines in the library are maintained by UW Copy/Duplicating Services. Comments and questions may be addressed to UW Copy/Duplicating Services.


Group Study Rooms

There are 7 group study rooms available in the Engineering Library. They are on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors.There is wireless access available throughout the Engineering Libary, including all study rooms. Ethernet jacks are also available in the 2nd and 4th floor study rooms. Whiteboards with pens and erasers are in every room. (Pens and erasers are also available at the Circulation Desk.)

Group Study Rooms:

  • Are available on a first come, first served basis. No key checkout is required.
  • Are for group study only, not for individual use. Individuals must relinquish a room if a group arrives.
  • No food or uncovered drink is allowed in the library, this includes study rooms!
  • Furniture, including chairs, must remain in the study rooms. Please do not remove the furniture.
  • Please do not leave library materials in the study rooms.
  • Please keep discussions quiet – The walls are not soundproof.
  • Be courteous and sensitive to the fact that these rooms are in high demand.
  • Please use the garbage cans provided in the study rooms.
Library users failing to comply with the conditions of this Policy will be subject to disciplinary actions under the Libraries' Policy on Libraries Disruptions.The Library reserves the right to close any room to group study at any time.

Outside Book Drop

A book drop is located next to the library's main entrance on the south side of the building, for return of materials when the library is closed.
