Remote Access to Beilstein Crossfire and SciFinder Scholar

The UW Libraries is introducing the SciFinder/Beilstein Portforwarder. This proxy server will now allow users with broadband to have remote access to Beilstein Crossfire and SciFinder Scholar. Please note! To use web-based databases and journals, you must also go through the UW Libraries primary proxy server-http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/connect.html.


New Users

First, if you do not already have the client on your harddrive, go to the appropriate site to download the software (note! Please follow all instructions provided!):

Then, for SciFinder, you need to replace the existing prf file with SFS (PC) Portforward .prf . For Macs use Mac site.prfBe sure to "save" rather than "open" this file since Microsoft uses .prf files for Outlook as well.

For Beilstein, you need to replace the default.prf file in the "groups" directory with the BEILSTEIN .prf. Be sure to "save" rather than "open" this file since Microsoft uses .prf files for Outlook as well.

The startup page is http://portforward.lib.washington.edu/ You will start here in the future everytime you want to start searching.
