The Foster Business Library offers an extensive collection of business databases on its homepage; see under Business Databases; see also the four folders at the top of that list for lists of Foster databases by topic:  Books, Articles--Full Text, Articles--Citations and Abstracts, and Company and Industry.   For more information on the three dozen Foster business databases, click here.   For more information on which of the three dozen Foster business databases to use, click here.   For more information on accessing Foster databases from off campus, click here.   For information about responsible database usage, click here.

  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc. Most information on this site is free and available on the Web (not just through the Foster Business Library homepage) but, via the Foster homepage, you can access the more detailed Members Only information (not available from home).

See the company factsheet for Toyota Motor Corporation and the link to the longer Company Overview as well as to company Financials. See also the list of companies (and competitors) in the Automotive & Transport - Auto Manufacturers industry and the Competitors section, comparing the company and its top three competitors.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe:   To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data by for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). Included among the sources is Hoovers Online, with members' access to company profiles. SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

Searching in SEC Filings and Reports for TM in retrieved eight 20-F reports (or parts of reports) for this foreign company, back to 2000. A search in the August, 2002 report for the term Marketing retrieved ten references. As the latest report explains, "Today, Toyota operates through 470 consolidated subsidiaries and 231 affiliated companies of which 58 companies are accounted for through the equity method." Typically, most large companies do not itemize operations for individual subsidiaries.

  • EIU Online:   One of the world's top sources for country intelligence, the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) employs 500 analysts who research almost 200 nations. Euromonitor also publishes important print titles in the Foster Business Library reference collection including European marketing data and statistics, International marketing data and statistics, and World consumer income and expenditure patterns.

A search in this database, in titles, for Toyota, produced no reports; a search in text for Toyota produced a list of 27 reports, many of them about the automobile markets in the United Kingdom and Japan. See the July 2002 market share report on Passenger cars, ATVs, RVs and pick-ups in the USA.

  • Factiva:   Use the Company Quick Search tab near the top of the screen to initiate a search for information about public or private companies; considerably more information is avaiable for the former than for the latter. (This database is only accessible from the library computers in the Foster Business Library and Balmer, MacKenzie Lewis Halls and SeaFirst Executive Education Center, on the Seattle campus, and at the Tacoma Campus and on Bothell Campus Libraries. It is not accessible from any other location on campus or through a dial-in connection.)

A Company Quick Search for TM retrieved information about the company's history, news about the company, press releases, trade articles, pictures, financials, etc.

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and Industry. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. • Statistical Universe:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Statistical Universe is an index to statistical data in commercial, international and U.S. government publications. Try the Power Tables for quick access to tables of data in GIF format.

Web Resources:
Unlike the library databases above, these online resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. For links to business websites by topic, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage. Good sources for business topics include trade associations (which often provide industry data unavailable elsewhere) and government regulatory and oversight agencies (which are also a good source for industry data). When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources.

  • Toyota Motor Corporation:   Company websites can be a rich source of information on corporate history, financials, marketing, news, and product information--or they can provide very little information about the company while furnishing a very large amount of product information. See Investor Relations for financials, annual reports back to 1997, etc. See also the separate sites for various countries and regions.

The site includes a search feature. See the company profile for Toyota Motor Corporation. See also the data for worldwide sales by manufacturer for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, as well as a list of companies ranked by market capitalization in December 2000.

  • National Automobile Dealers Association:   "The National Automobile Dealers Association, founded in 1917, represents more than 19,400 new car and truck dealers, both import and domestic, with more than 49,300 separate franchises. NADA membership is open to any new-automobile or new-truck dealership holding a new automobile or truck sales and service franchise." The Association "provides counsel on legal and regulatory matters, represents dealers on Capitol Hill, develops research data on the automobile industry, and operates training and service programs to improve dealership business operations, sales and service practices. It's the research and industry data that makes trade and industry associations such valuable sources for information. This site also offers a search engine. See the Media Center for NADA Data on the industry (most of which are in PDF format). See also the Data section. See also the NADA document on Internet/Web Site Framework (12 PDF pages).
