Hoovers Online:
Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online
offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to
company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions,
earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information,
insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents,
products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc. Most information on this site is
free and available on the Web (not just through the Foster Business Library homepage)
but, via the Foster homepage, you can access the more detailed Members Only
information (not available from home).
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe: To find company information, go to Business and then to Company
Financial where
you can obtain financial and other data by for companies.
Information is available from twenty different
sources (each of which must be searched separately).
Included among the sources is Hoovers Online, with members' access to
company profiles. SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly
rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F)
to
locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends,
strategy, competitors, industry, etc. (This database is available widely on campus and may be
accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries'
proxy server.)
Searching in SEC Filings and Reports for TM in
retrieved eight 20-F reports (or parts of reports) for this foreign company, back to 2000. A search in the
August, 2002 report for the
term Marketing retrieved ten references. As the latest report explains,
"Today, Toyota
operates through 470 consolidated subsidiaries and 231 affiliated
companies of which 58 companies are accounted for through the equity
method." Typically, most large companies do not itemize operations for individual subsidiaries.
EIU Online:
One of the world's top sources for country intelligence, the EIU (Economist
Intelligence Unit) employs
500 analysts who research almost 200 nations. The Foster Business
Library provides access to their Country Profiles, Country Reports,
Country Commerce, and Country Finance in print editions and this
database provides online access to these publications, often in both
HTML and PDF formats.
An advanced search in Viewswires, limited to the automotive industry, for
Toyota and marketing retrieved a list of 17
articles.
Euromonitor Market Research Monitor:
This database provides global consumer market information, with demographics, trends and
developments, market
background, market sizes and forecasts, market shares, key players, and company profiles.
This database provides over 1,800 reports with market data and
detailed company profiles, including market shares, brand information, company strategy and SWOT
analyses of the companies, for many countries. For eight major countries (Australia, China,
France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States), in-depth industry
information is also available. Euromonitor also publishes
important print titles in the Foster Business Library reference collection including European marketing data and
statistics, International marketing data and
statistics, and
World consumer income and
expenditure patterns.
A search in this database, in titles, for Toyota, produced no reports; a search in
text for Toyota produced a list of 27 reports, many of them about the automobile
markets in the United Kingdom and Japan. See the July 2002 market share report on Passenger
cars, ATVs, RVs
and pick-ups in the USA.
Use the Company Quick Search tab near the top of the screen to initiate a search for
information about public or private companies; considerably more information is avaiable for the former than for the
latter.
(This database is only accessible from the library computers in the Foster Business Library and Balmer, MacKenzie
Lewis Halls and SeaFirst Executive Education Center, on the Seattle campus, and at the Tacoma Campus and on Bothell
Campus Libraries. It is not accessible from any other location on campus or through a dial-in connection.)
A Company Quick Search for TM retrieved information about the company's history, news about the company,
press releases, trade articles, pictures, financials, etc.
Investext:
On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and
Industry.
Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and
industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well
as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. All reports are in PDF format.
(This database is available widely on campus and may be
accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries'
proxy server.)
A company search for Toyota Motor Co produced a list of 254
reports from sources such as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and others.
Statistical Universe:
Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage.
Statistical Universe is an index to statistical data in commercial, international and U.S.
government publications. Try the Power Tables for quick access to tables of data in GIF format.
A keyword search for Toyota produced 25 tables.
A search for "Motor vehicle industry" produced a message warning that more than a thousand
tables would be retrieved by such a search. Narrowing the search with the term expenditures produced a
list
of over 150 tables; for "Motor vehicle industry" and marketing,59 tables. A search for the
subject Automobiles produced more than a thousand tables; for Automobiles and marketing,64 tables.
Forrester
Research:
Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage.
Forrester Research provides access to reports and briefings on the effects of technology
change on businesses, consumers, and society, and analyzes such technology
areas as new media, computing, software, networking, telecommunications, and the Internet.
To use this database, UW

(Available from off-campus.)
A search for Toyota retrieved 57 reports--but with the highest relevancy rating only
12%.
Mediamark Reporter:

demographics, product and brand usage, and advertising media preferences based on survey
responses from a sample of over 25,000 consumers in the United States. Print copies of

call number HF5415.3 .M43, dated spring 1998; the online version offers year 2000 data.
Search tips for using this database are available by clicking here. Available only on PC #19.
Demographics of all Toyota purchasers may be found under Automotive, Autos & Trucks, Make/Model, as well as for
several Toyota models.
Unlike the library databases above, these online resources are available wherever you have web access;
they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for
authentication. For links to business websites by topic, see Business Resources on the Web
on the Foster Business Library homepage. Good sources for business topics include trade associations (which often
provide industry data unavailable elsewhere) and government regulatory and oversight agencies (which are also a good
source for industry data).
When using web resources, be sure to
evaluate the credibility of these resources.
Toyota Motor Corporation:
Company websites can be a rich source of information on corporate history, financials, marketing, news,
and product information--or they can provide very little information about the company while furnishing a
very large amount of product information. This company homepage is a good source for information about the company
but, surprisingly, there is no site search feature.
See Corporate Information for company history, overview, and
special reports. See Investor Relations for financials, annual
reports back to 1997,
etc. See also the separate sites for various countries and regions.
Quicken.Com:
This site is a good source for information about companies and about their
position among their competitors; use the Compare Companies feature on the left menu for
this information.
See the company profile for Toyota as well
as the
company's dominant position among its competitors
in terms of
market capitalization in the Auto Manufacturers/Major industry.
Yahoo! Finance:
This site is excellent for company and investment
information as well as an excellent source for financial ratio comparisons with industry,
sector and S&P
500.
See the company profile for Toyota Motor Corporation as well as the excellent
Ratio
Comparisons for the company, its industry, its sector, and the S&P 500.
Automotive Intelligence:
This site provides information about automobile companies from around the world. Manufacturers are its
main focus, but it has suppliers too. Revenues, production, employees, income, profits, and historical
revenues are available in addition to information about the companies and about the automotobile
industry. The site includes a search feature.
See the company profile for Toyota Motor
Corporation.
See also the data for worldwide sales by manufacturer for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000,
as well as a list of companies ranked by market capitalization in December 2000.
National Automobile Dealers Association:
"The National Automobile Dealers Association, founded in 1917, represents more than 19,400 new
car and truck dealers,
both import and domestic, with more than 49,300 separate franchises.
NADA membership is open to any new-automobile or new-truck dealership holding a new automobile
or truck sales and
service franchise." The Association "provides counsel on legal and regulatory matters,
represents dealers on Capitol Hill,
develops research data on the automobile industry, and
operates training and service programs to improve dealership business operations, sales and
service practices. It's
the research and industry data that makes trade and industry associations such valuable
sources for information. This
site also offers a search engine.
See the Media Center for NADA Data
on the industry (most of which are in PDF format). See also the Data section.
See also the NADA document on Internet/Web
Site Framework (12 PDF pages).
Business Full Coverage (Yahoo! Daily News):

interest, including many industries. These full coverage reports collect articles, webpages, and
links to relevant
organizations, audio, video, and recent news stories.

There is no search box at this site.
See automobile industry data, quick facts on the U.S. motor vehicle market,

According to Robert Berkman, "This portal collects timely headlines from online news sites and a selection of blogs via the use of RSS feed technology. Business Updates currently provides news headlines on more than a dozen popular, narrowly defined business topics as well as news about and from 15 large
corporations." Among the fifteen companies covered is Toyota.
