See the company fact sheet for Sony BMG Music Entertainment, a joint venture, formed in mid-2004, of Sony Corporation of America (in turn, a subsidiary of public company Sony Corporation) and the private German company, Bertelsmann AG. This recent subsidiary of Sony was formerly known as Sony Music Entertainment; see this latter link for the complicated history of Sony Music. No competitors are listed for Sony BMG so try those for their competitor, Universal Music Group.
Go to the link for Sony Corporation's Products/Operations and Financials.
See also their industry overview for the Music Industry, which mentions the Sony—Bertelsmann merger, and for its sub-industry, Internet Music Distribution & Downloads.
A search in this database, in titles, for Music, produced four reports, including recent reports on Prerecorded Music and Video Software Formats, in the U.S., France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A search for Audio Products also produced four reports, all recent, on the same countries.
A search in this database for the
"Sony Music" retrieved just one report; a search for the
"Music Industry," retrieved just 19 reports.
A company search for Sony, with the ticker symbol SNE, produced a list of over 660
reports. A keyword search for Sony and Music produced over fifty reports; for the Music Industry, over 45 reports.
Since Sony is not a U.S. company but does trade stock here, it files S.E.C. 20-F reports, for foreign companies, rather than S.E.C. 10-K and other filings.
This database includes over thirty SEC 20-F filings (or parts of filings) for Sony. The June 25, 2004 report provides information on the company's history and development of the company, with references to various forms of Sony Music, as well as itemization of music sales and revenues.
Sony Corporation is included in this database, with extensive information. See also their information for Bertelsmann AG.
A keyword search for "Recorded Music" produced just seven tables; for "Compact Discs," over fifty tables.
Sony Corporation is included in this database, in the Foreign Electronics Industry, not music.

Unlike library databases, these Web resources are available wherever
you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. When using web resources, be sure to
evaluate the credibility of these resources. For a subject index to web resources, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage.

Foster Business Library Corporate Annual Reports:
The Foster Business Library maintains a collection of several thousand annual reports for hundreds of U.S. and foreign companies. These reports are filed in lateral filing cabinets near the Foster Reference desk under the sign Corporate Annual Reports. Annual reports for companies in an industry can be a valuable source of information about the industry itself. For a list of all the companies in the Corporate Annual Reports collection, click here. For an index to corporate annual reports in the collection by industry sector, click here. For an index to companies in the collection with headquarters outside the U.S., click here.
Most music industry companies are subsidiaries of much larger media companies. For instance, for the music industry, the Foster Business Library annual reports collection includes such companies as Time Warner, parent of Warner Music, Sony Corporation and Vivendi. See the Media sector.
Foster Business Library Articles:
In addition to the 800 journals in the Foster Business Library Periodicals Collection, the Foster Business Library offers access to 11,000 full text periodical articles through its full text article databases such as: ABI/Inform Global, Factiva, and Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. These article databases may be found on the Foster Business Library homepage, listed alphabetically under Business Databases.
Of these three main sources, all but Factiva are available from any computer on the campus network (as well as from home) via the UW Connectivity Kit or via the Libraries' proxy server. The easiest of these databases to use is ABI/Inform Global. For more information about accessing Foster Business Library databases from off campus, click here. For more information about business databases, click here.
This database offers full text articles from thousands of scholarly journals, magazines, industry and trade periodicals, and newspapers. To find articles on specific topics, search by word or phrase by keying your search phrase into the search box. ABI/Inform Global includes journals but not national or Washington state newspapers (though the Wall Street Journal is included). It also does not include valuable trade and industry and other periodicals. Your searches will span the widest possible array of publications by expanding your search to all databases in ABI/Inform. To expand your search to include all collections in this database, click on Select multiple databases, to the right of the search box. Click on all of the databases.
Your search terms will be highlighted in red in each article. For tips on searching this database, click here.
