Foster Business Library News Updates:

February 10, 2006 — Factiva and Value Line databases

Dear B-School Faculty and PhDs,

FACTIVA NOW AVAILABLE FROM HOME:

Some good news! Access to Factiva is no longer limited to Business School buildings. Now you can access it from off-campus via the Libraries proxy server.

Factiva is a Dow Jones-Reuters database that provides full text access to the Harvard Business Review, New York times, all editions of Dow Jones publications including the Wall Street Journal and Barron's, plus thousands of other business publications. It's especially useful for business news, general news, and trade journals.

One of our favorite Factiva features is the "News Page" tab, which allows one to browse the most recent two weeks of Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Business Week, Barron's, Forbes, and Fortune.

To connect, go to the Foster Library webpage and select "Factiva." http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/

VALUE LINE ONLINE CANCELED:

And some not-so-good news. In January Value Line informed us that the cost for UW's online subscription would increase by 50%, effective Feb 1. After several weeks of unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a more reasonable and affordable price, we have canceled our subscription to the service and it is no longer available through the UW Libraries.

We regret any inconvenience this causes faculty, staff, and students. In the next few weeks week we'll be deciding whether to reinstate our print subscription to Value Line.

October 6, 2005 -- Trial for Historical Wall Street Journal

Dear B-School Faculty and PhDs,

The UW Libraries has begun a brief trial subscription to the Historical Wall Street Journal database through Proquest. We are considering starting a permanent UW subscription and need to ask for your help in evaluating the product.

This version of the WSJ is a full digital image database. What you'll see is the original newspaper as it appeared when published. You can either browse the paper by section or search by keyword, company name, personal name, stock quotes, etc.

The database covers the paper from its inception in 1889 through 1987. An additional year is added to the database as it comes off licensing royalty, so next year it will cover years 1889-1988.

The trial allows UW users free access until October 25, 2005. It can be accessed at:

- Click on "Proquest Historical Newspapers - The Wall Street Journal"
- Password: Historical

Please take a few minutes to try it out and let us know what you think about it. Both favorable and unfavorable opinions will be appreciated. Please send your comments to balib@u.washington.edu or scp@u.washington.edu.

Thanks in advance for your help. If you have questions about the database please contact Siew-Choo Poh (scp@u or 543-4360).

June 29, 2005 -- Old proxy service to be discontinued JULY 31, 2005

Dear Business School Community:

FYI, I'm passing on an announcement from UW Libraries Information Technology Services regarding an upcoming change in the Libraries' proxy service.

Gordon Aamot
Head, Foster Business Library

Old proxy service to be discontinued JULY 31, 2005

Over the last several years, one of the most significant changes we've seen in the ways faculty, students, and staff use the UW Libraries has been increased demand for remote access to licensed library resources like ejournals and databases. To meet this demand, for the last 5 years the Libraries has run an http proxy server to provide UW users access to licensed resources from offcampus. This original proxy service required browser configuration and used the 14-digit barcode on your UW ID card, plus a 4-digit PIN, for authentication.

In order to make offcampus access simpler, last year the Libraries began running a second and easier-to-use proxy service. The UW Libraries' new proxy service does not require you to configure your browser and uses your UW NetID for authentication.

Usage of the new proxy has grown to a point that it is no longer viable to run the two proxy services in tandem. This announcement is to inform you that the UW Libraries' old proxy service will be discontinued July 31, 2005.

To start a session with the new proxy, visit http://offcampus.lib.washington.edu/, or click on the "Off-Campus Access" link in the upper right corner of most pages on the website (both UW Libraries and Health Sciences/Healthlinks).

Many users have found it useful to put a link to the new proxy on their browser's Links toolbar. Creating a proxy bookmarklet allows you easy access to the proxy authentication page when not searching from Libraries pages. Information on how to install the proxy bookmarklet is available at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/proxyTools.html

More information about the new proxy service is available at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/ezhelp.html

To remove the browser settings for the old proxy service, please follow the instructions at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/remove.html

If you have any questions about using the new proxy service or removing the old configuration from your browser, please contact us at http://www.lib.washington.edu/about/contacts.html

June 9, 2005 -- Foster Business Library Reserve Deadline

THE FOSTER LIBRARY RESERVE DEADLINE FOR SUMMER QUARTER IS MONDAY, JUNE 13TH!
If you would like material placed on Reserve for a class you are teaching next quarter or to renew this quarter's material, please submit a Reserve Request to the Foster Business Library by Monday, June 13th.

HOW DO I PUT MATERIALS ON RESERVE?
Fill out a Reserve Request Form each quarter you would like the material on Reserve. It's very easy to put things on Reserve, you can submit a Reserve Request Form the following ways:
-Come to the library and fill out a form in person.
-Fill out a form online at:   https://www.lib.washington.edu/asp/uwnetid/ereserves/

WHAT IS RESERVE?
Course Reserves are a service provided by the UW Libraries to support your classes. Materials are brought in by instructors or taken from the library collection, placed in a controlled access area behind our front desk, and given shorter loan periods to maximize access to the materials.

WHAT TYPES OF MATERIAL ARE PLACED ON RESERVE?
Textbooks, solution's manuals, readings, sample tests, videos, etc. Pretty much anything you're using as course materials can be on Reserve.

WHAT ABOUT ELECTRONIC RESERVE?
We can make your course materials available through the Web, searchable and accessible through the online library catalog. E-Reserves work best for shorter readings and handouts, if they are more than 30 pages, the files get too large. We ask you give us clear photocopies or laser printouts to scan with our sheetfeeder. The files are stored as Adobe Acrobat files that students can access from home or campus. Articles and book chapters can also be placed on Electronic Reserve, but we ask that you submit them as photocopies so we can run them through our sheet feeder.

Thanks! If you have any questions about Reserve or any other library services, don't hesitate to contact us at 3-4360 or by email at balib@u.washington.edu.

Thanks, Dan

April 20, 2005 -- Foster Business Library News

Dear Business School Faculty:

Here's some news about new databases and an easy, effective way to use the Libraries' proxy server to access electronic services from home.

MORE ONLINE BUSINESS CONTENT ADDED:

As part of a new statewide contract, the ABI/Inform database of full text periodical articles has been significantly expanded, with many more publications and articles added that will be of interest to the Business School community.

The next time you log on to one of the ABI/Inform databases, use the "Select Multiple Database" feature and you'll find a much longer list of databases. You can check off the specific ones you want to search or use the "Select All Databases" feature, with one click, to search all the databases produced by Proquest. Besides Business articles, other subjects covered in the list include Education, Social Science, and Medicine.

Notable among the new databases are:

In most cases, this new content is full text, available in your office, at home, or anywhere on campus. The ABI databases are linked on the Foster Business Library webpage: http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/

BOOKMARKLET FOR PROXY SERVER:

A bookmarklet is now available for the proxy server. You can add the new Proxy Bookmarklet to your Favorites, Bookmarks, or Toolbar. Once you do, you can start using the proxy service to directly access restricted resources without having to go back to a Libraries' website. When you are denied access to a UW-licensed resource when off-campus, just click the bookmark, login with your UWNetID, and you will be allowed access to the restricted database or ejournal. Installation instructions are located at: http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/proxyTools.html

Users who tested the bookmarklet found it immensely helpful and one said it's "exactly what's missing" from the proxy server.

Information about it and an "un-proxy a URL" tool can be found at:
http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/proxyTools.html

For more about the proxy bookmarklet, go to:

April 8, 2005 -- Foster Library - Faculty Refreshers

Dear Business School Faculty:

In the past month, Foster Business librarians have met with several Business faculty interested in updating their knowledge of new research tools available through the library. With the tremendous changes in databases, availability of online content, and research capabilities that have taken place over the past few years, they found these short sessions very valuable. They were especially happy to learn of how easily research can be done from their office, home, or while out of the Seattle area.

If you'd like an individual refresher session with a librarian on Business Library databases and other Libraries services that are currently available online (for example, renewing books and requesting books from academic libraries in Washington and Oregon) please contact the Foster Business Library at balib@u.washington.edu, 543-4360, or send me a note. We'll meet with you in your office or here in the library. We can cover the basics in less than half an hour or would be glad to spend more time if you're interested.

February 9, 2005 -- Library Resources for B-School Staff and Faculty

Dear Business School Community:

During the past few weeks I've been thinking about how library resources can help support the operations side of the Business School--for example, breaking business news for current awareness, sources for background research for speakers and companies, ideas for improving office productivity, reliable country information, and personal investment advice. Here are some resources available via the Foster Library webpage (and at your desktop) that you might find useful in doing your daily work:

http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/

BUSINESS NEWS ONLINE

Free business news is everywhere these days. We've pulled together some of the best free sites onto one webpage:

http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/guides/busnews.html

Two subscription services you'll find on this page are Factiva and LEXIS-NEXIS. They cover thousands of newspapers and newswires and provide coverage of literally all topics. You can search for current information on companies, persons, or industries. LEXIS-NEXIS is available to current UW faculty and staff from anywhere, anytime. Factiva is licensed only for Foster, Balmer, and Mackenzie:

Factiva
Lexis-Nexis

ABI/INFORM GLOBAL

ABI/Inform Global is a great source for finding popular and scholarly articles on a wide range of business topics, including business education and business schools, customer service, office management, workplace diversity, marketing of services, and philanthropy. The full text is provided for most articles:

ABI/Inform Global

More information about searching ABI/Inform Global is available at http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/guides/abi.html

HOOVERS ONLINE

Hoovers Online is an excellent place to start your search for company information. Although its strength is in its coverage of US public companies, it also covers international companies and large private companies:

Hoovers Online

More information about doing company research is available at the "Business Research Guides" link on the Foster webpage:

Company Research

EIU ONLINE

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is one of world's largest providers of international Business information--political news, economic analysis, country information, etc. UW is one of the biggest subscribers to EIU services in the United States (and not just "west of Chicago and north of San Francisco";-) This is a great resource to consult if you're planning an overseas trip or doing international business research.

You can find more international business resources at:

International Business Research

VALUE LINE

You now have desktop access to that old stalwart investment guide, Value Line. Coverage in the online version includes what was in the Standard and Expanded paper subscriptions. In addition to stocks, the online version also covers mutual funds.

You can find more resources on investing on the Foster "Investing Resources" page:

Dear Business School Community:

This message is to let you know about two changes you'll be seeing soon in the Balmer Copy Center and Foster Business Library.

October 12, 2004

Dear Business School Community:

Here's some quick information about the electronic business resources available to you at your desktop from the Foster Business Library.

Databases

As University of Washington faculty, students, and staff you have access to a wealth of online resources for company, industry, management, financial, economic, scholarly articles, news, and other business information. Some of our most heavily used databases include ABI/Inform Global, Hoover's Online, and EIU Online (Economist Intelligence Unit). Most are available to you any time and any place. A few however, like Factiva, are only licensed for use in the Foster Library or in Business School facilities.

You'll find links to all our business resources on the Foster Library webpage, at:
http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/

The URL below lists our business databases by category (articles, company information, country information, etc):
http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/guides/which.html

A special note:   last year, one of the resources to which we've subscribed the longest, Compact D/SEC (aka Compact Disclosure), was discontinued by the publisher. We won't be getting new discs, but we'll continue to make the older discs available for researchers. We've replaced it with Mergent Online. Mergent (formerly known as Moody's) provides online access to information on US and International companies including financials, stock, properties, joint ventures, subsidiaries, S.E.C. filings, etc. We have a campus site license, so Mergent online can be accessed from home or office. Go to: http://www.mergentonline.com/compsearch.asp

Electronic Journals and Journal Articles

Here are some tips for finding electronic journals.

If you know which journal you want:

If you're searching for articles on a business topic or by a specific author but don't know which journals to look in:

It's our goal to help you find the information you need to be successful in your research, teaching, and learning. If you have questions about finding e-journals, full-text articles, or any other library questions please contact the Foster Library reference desk at 543-8012, Circulation Desk at 543-4360, or send email to balib@u.washington.edu. Foster Business Library News Updates

September 30, 2004

Dear Business School Community:

Welcome back! The staff of the Foster Business Library look forward to seeing old friends again and making new ones, and working with you all this year to help make your teaching, research, and learning endeavors successful.

I know this is a busy time for everyone, but I want to alert you to a few changes you'll need to know about.

New Libraries' Website

You'll notice that the Foster Business Library webpage has a different look. The Foster redesign was part of a general Libraries' effort to make its pages more usable and inviting to library users. You can use the page to access library resources like databases, ejournals, and the UW Libraries Catalog, as well as renew materials you have checked out or request books held in other UW Libraries to be sent to Foster for pick-up. Check out the new Foster Business Library webpage at http://www.lib.washington.edu/business/.

Connecting from home with the new proxy server

Most of the databases, electronic journals and e-books available through the Libraries are restricted to UW faculty, students and staff. You have two options to access these UW restricted resources from off-campus:

New borrowing and fine policies in effect

The Libraries has implemented a number of new loan policies designed to maximize access to library materials. The number of renewals has been increased, date due reminders will be sent to borrowers with email in their library accounts and the fine system has been changed to better motivate borrowers to return material on time.

The number of renewals has been increased - most non-reserve items that check out for more than 14 days can be renewed an unlimited number of times, items that have a loan period of 14 day or less can be renewed three times. Books needed by other borrowers cannot be renewed.

To help borrowers remember due dates the Libraries now sends email date due reminders 2 days before material is due. Borrowers need to have an email address in their library account to receive these email notices. Check your library account to see if you have an email address listed.

The overdue fine system has been changed - overdue fines for non-reserve materials will be $.50 per day with a 4 day grace period, on the fifth day overdue the charge will be $2.50 with a daily increment of $.50 for each additional day overdue. When an item becomes 21 days overdue a replacement cost and a non-refundable $20 billing fee will be charged. Fines for reserve material will stay the same.
