On September 21, the Libraries implemented a number of new loan policies designed to maximize access to library materials. The number of renewals has been increased, date due reminders will be sent to borrowers with email in their library accounts, and the fine system has been changed to better motivate borrowers to return material on time.
The number of renewals has been increased; most non-reserve items that check out for more than 14 days can be renewed an unlimited number of times, items that have a loan period of 14 day or less can be renewed three times. Books needed by other borrowers cannot be renewed.
To help borrowers remember due dates, the Libraries now sends email date due reminders 2 days before material is due. Borrowers need to have an email address in their library account to receive these email notices. Check your library account to see if you have an email address listed.
The overdue fine system has been changed; overdue fines for non-reserve materials will be $.50 per day with a 4 day grace period, on the fifth day overdue the charge will be $2.50 with a daily increment of $.50 for each additional day overdue. When an item becomes 21 days overdue, a replacement cost and a non-refundable $20 billing fee will be charged. Fines for reserve material will stay the same.

As of today, group study rooms may be booked at the Circulation Desk. During interim, the rooms were left open and unlocked for student use. Fliers are apparently appearing on campus and in the University District offering free wireless networking from a company called "WIFINATION LLC", and some wireless access points named WIFINATION are available in some spots. The instructions ask you to enter your email address and password to get access. This is probably an attempt to steal UWNetIDs and associated passwords ("phishing" -- see http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/phishingalrt.htm). Be very careful about entering personal information and/or passwords into an unknown system.
Interim hours continue this week, and part of next week, in the Foster Business Library, where we open at 10AM and close at 5PM, Monday through Friday (closed weekends), through September 28th. Fall quarter hours go into effect on September 29th. The Balmer Cafe is scheduled to reopen for fall quarter on September 27th.
The Summit Catalog, the catalog of over two dozen libraries in Washington and Oregon, will be down today, Tuesday, September 7th, from 9AM to about noon, for a software upgrade.
Factiva will be down, due to scheduled maintenance, from Saturday, September 4, 11:00 a.m., to Sunday, September 5, at 4:00 a.m.
